GIMP: Chapter 4: Drawing

In the NEW IMAGE dialog box, how can you begin with a TRANSPARENT image rather than an image filled with the background color?
Choose Transparent from the Fill with menu of the New Layer dialog.

What is the COMMENT box in the NEW IMAGE dialog box for?
To include your name and copyright information, or information about the image you're creating and what it represents.

When you draw new objects in GIMP, why is it advisable to create them on a new layer?
So that you can modify specific pieces of the drawing without messing up the entire drawing.

Briefly describe these properties found in the NEW LAYER box:

  • Layer Name: Choose a memorable name for the layer.
  • Width and Height: Set the default size of the image.
  • Layer  Fill Type: Specify whether the layer will start out transparent.

Briefly describe the purpose of the following drawing tool options:

  • Mode – Offers the same list of modes as the Layers dialog plus a few that are special.
  • Opacity – Makes the tool's lines more transparent.
  • Scale – Lets you make the brush bigger or smaller.
  • Fade out – Makes the line fade out after a specified distance.
  • Jitter – Adds some randomness to the line.
  • Incremental – Will make the line darker if opacity is less than 100%.
  • Use color from gradient – Uses the gradient instead of the current foreground color.

What is a graphics tablet and what is used for? Can tablets be used with GIMP?
A graphics tablet is used for drawing with a stylus, rather than your mouse. Tablets can be used with GIMP.

Drawing Tools:  Briefly describe what each of these drawing tools is used for:

  • Pencil – Hard-edge brushes.
  • Brush – Can use fuzzy-edged brushes and hard-edged brushes, but in a different way from the Pencil tool.
  • Ink Pen – Emulates an old-fashioned fountain pen with replaceable nibs.
  • Eraser – Erases.
  • Rectangle Select – Makes a rectangular selection.
  • Lasso – Draw a freehand selection of any shape.
  • Bucket Fill – Fills a selection or layer with the foreground color.
  • Blend – Makes a smooth transition from the foreground color to the background color.
