GIMP: Chapter 8: Color

Briefly define the following color terms:

  • Additive color - Transmitted colors. The light of one color, combined with the light of another color, is perceived as a third color that is lighter than either component. Red, green and blue.
  • Subtractive color - Adding shades of paint to a reflecting surface, making the image darker. Cyan, magenta and yellow.
  • HSV color - Hue, saturation, and value. Uses three numbers to represent each color.
  • CMYK color - The subtractive colors plus pure black to get better dark colors. Used for printing.

What is the relationship between additive and subtractive color?
If you mix any two of the additive primary colors, you get one of the subtractive primary colors, and vice versa.

How many bits do most computers use to represent color?
32 or 24 bits.

What is the TRIANGLE COLOR SELECTOR used for?
Provides an alternative HSV interface for selecting a color.
