GIMP: Chapter 5: Selection

Why are the GIMP Selection tools important?
To choose one part of the image and ignore the rest.

What is meant by the "marching ants"?
The black-and-white dashed outline around whatever is currently selected. The dashes along this line move, making the selection outline seem to shimmer.

Describe the following terms found in the SELECT menu:

  • All - Selects the whole image.
  • None - Makes sure nothing is selected.
  • Invert - Reverses the selection.
  • Float - Cuts out the selected area and pastes it as a new floating layer.
  • By Color - Switches to the Select by Color tool.
  • From Path - Converts the current path to a selection.
  • Feather - Makes the edges of the selection fuzzy.
  • Sharpen - Makes a fuzzy selection sharper.
  • Shrink and Grow - Makes the selection larger or smaller.
  • Border - Replaces a selection with a new one that follows the border of the old selection.
  • Rounded Rectangle - Rounds the edges of a rectangular selection.
  • To Path - Converts a selection to a path.

Why would you want to SELECT BY COLOR?
To separate a foreground from a simple background.

What is a BEZIER PATH?
Control points that outline your object.

What is the purpose of the INTELLIGENT SCISSORS?
Similar to the Bezier Path, but GIMP will make a more complicated path that follows the edges it can detect in the image.

What is the purpose of the QUICK MASK?
Lets you see the selection visually superimposed on the image instead of the usual "marching ants" view.

What is the purpose of LAYER MASKS?
Defines how much, and which parts, of a layer will be visible. Useful for combining images.

What is the purpose of SIOX?
The Simple Interactive Object Extraction tool  extracts the foreground object.

When is using SIOX most effective?
When you have significant color differences.
